Kentucky police seize more than 100 pounds of marijuana from 3 vape shops

Police seized more than 100 pounds of marijuana from three vape shops in Bowling Green this week, according to a news release.

Law enforcement began investigating after receiving complaints from parents and others about vape shops selling products to minors, some as young as 13, according to the release from the Bowling Green — Warren County Drug Task Force.

The Kentucky State Police laboratory analyzed plant material detectives bought from stores and confirmed it was marijuana. Police then had the material analyzed at a private lab to determine the level of THC, the intoxicating compound in pot.

The THC in the products detectives bought ranged from 18.1% to 29.8%, according to the release.

Under state and federal law, vape and tobacco shops can only legally sell products with a maximum of 0.3% THC, according to the news release.

Officers from the task force, KSP, Bowling Green Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office served search warrants Tuesday at three stores.

At Smoke & Vape on the 31W Bypass, police confiscated about 60 pounds of marijuana and 15,600 small marijuana cigars, called blunts.

At Smoke & Vape Superstore on Scottsville Road, police took about 54 pounds of pot and 5,400 blunts, plus seized 2 pounds of marijuana and a pistol at Smoke Department on the 31W Bypass, according to the release.

Police plan to present evidence to a grand jury and expect multiple indictments, said Thomas M. Loving, director of the task force.

Kentucky lawmakers approved a measure this year aimed at cracking down on sales to minors at shops that sell tobacco, vape products and alternative nicotine products.
