Central Kentucky mother, son duo claims state’s $167.3M Powerball jackpot win
A mom and son duo from Georgetown will split a $167.3 million prize after buying a $2 lottery ticket that ended up earning them the largest Powerball jackpot ever won in Kentucky.
The mother, Linda Grizzle, and her son, Shannon Farthing, presented their winning ticket at the Kentucky Lottery headquarters Monday. Farthing bought the ticket from Clark’s Pump N Shop at 480 Connector Road in Georgetown for Saturday’s drawing.
The lucky ticket matched all five white balls and the Powerball from Saturday’s drawing. The winning Powerball numbers were 1, 12, 14, 18 and 69 and the Powerball was 2.
Grizzle and Farthing have the choice of receiving their prize money in 30 graduated annual payments or taking the cash option of $77.3 million. They said they are consulting with a financial adviser to determine which is the best option, according to a Monday Kentucky Lottery press release.
“It’s going to be a good Mother’s Day,” Grizzle told Kentucky Lottery officials. “This is going to pay off my debt.”
Clark’s Pump N Shop will receive more than $37,000 for selling the winning ticket.
“Kentucky finally has a Powerball jackpot winner! And not just any Powerball jackpot prize, it is a record for Kentucky. It is $167.3 million,” Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Mary Harville said in the press release. “This is so exciting for the winners because the winners have won $167.3 million but also for the retailer. They are going to get a commission for selling that big winner. And then, of course, the citizens, the people of the Commonwealth, everyone’s a winner. Because Kentucky Lottery proceeds fund college scholarships and grants for our Kentucky college students to go to college right here in Kentucky.”
In fiscal year 2024, 70% of Kentucky Lottery proceeds went to winners, 20% went to the commonwealth for college scholarships and grant programs, 5% went to retailers and 5% went toward administrative costs, the organization reports.
The previous record-holder for the largest Powerball win in Kentucky was a 2009 $128.6 million jackpot from another ticket purchased in Georgetown, at ProTravel Marathon, according to lottery officials. Another Powerball jackpot winning ticket was purchased in Kentucky in 2010.
The Powerball costs $2 to play, with a $1 optional Power Play add-on, and drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Two Kentucky stores sold large prize winning tickets, worth $50,000 and $150,000, in the April 19 Powerball drawing.
