Police shoot, kill man at Northern Kentucky Amazon facility
A 35-year-old man was shot and killed by police officers at an Amazon facility in Northern Kentucky Tuesday morning, according to Kentucky State Police and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened just after 7 a.m. at 7435 Industrial Road in Florence, according to the sheriff’s office. KSP said officers initially responded to a report of a stolen semi-truck and later pulled over the vehicle, driven by Michael Simpson, of Cleves, Ohio, near the Amazon facility.
Simpson did not follow officers’ commands and got into a fight with officers, according to KSP. One officer from the Florence Police Department suffered minor injuries in the fight.
Simpson then pointed a gun toward his head and began walking to the nearby industrial park, according to KSP. Officers followed Simpson, and at some point during the incident, two sheriff’s deputies shot him.
Simpson died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Northern Kentucky, according to the sheriff’s office.
Other than the minor injuries to the Florence police officer, no other injuries were reported.
KSP is investigating the shooting, which is routine when law enforcement officers fire their weapons while responding to incidents.
“KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation,” KSP said in a statement. “To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.”
There were three shootings involving law enforcement officers in Kentucky Tuesday. One happened in Berea, where a man pinned an officer between two vehicles before the officer fired his gun into the vehicle to stop the incident.
The other happened in Knox County, where a woman was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center after being shot by a sheriff’s deputy.
