Eastern KY man scans lottery ticket 5 times just to be sure of his 6-figure win
An Eastern Kentucky man walked away with a lottery jackpot win north of $100,000 after a quick stop at a Circle K recently.
Braiden Hutton, of Corbin, told Kentucky Lottery officials he was after a Polar Pop when he decided to stop at the Circle K on Gordon Hill Pike. On a whim, he bought a $3 Fast Play Blizzard Bingo ticket and walked it up to the scanner.
An amount for $106,722 flashed across the screen.
“I scanned it five times,” Hutton said, according to a Kentucky Lottery news release. “I paused for a second. There’s no way I’m seeing this.”
Having walked to the store, he called his mom to deliver the news, pleading with her to hurry to the store so she could see for herself.
“I made him go in the store and scan it in front of me. I was skeptical at first, but when I saw the screen, I couldn’t believe it. We were both shaking,” Stephanie Hutton told lottery officials.
A departure from the usual scratch-off games Hutton plays, the fast play is a series of games with instant cash prizes and a rolling jackpot. The $3 price point grants players a shot to win 30% of the progressive jackpot, which is attached to odds of 1 to 240,000, per the game’s rules.
After learning of his win, Hutton and his mother drove to Kentucky Lottery headquarters to claim their prize, $76,839.84 after taxes. Hutton says he plans to use the prize money to improve his living situation and save, as well.
“I want to make sure I use this money wisely and save some of it,” he said.
This isn’t the only recent mother-son duo to claim a large Kentucky Lottery prize. Monday, the lottery announced a mother and son from Georgetown claimed a $167.3 million prize they won playing the Powerball.
