KY deputy shoots, kills man who charged at deputy with machete, KSP says
A Kentucky sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who charged at the deputy with a machete, according to Kentucky State Police.
The incident happened sometime Monday evening in the 100 block of Eighth Street in Corydon. KSP said 64-year-old Charles Powell Jr., of Corydon, was threatening family members and armed with a machete.
The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and confronted Powell. KSP said Powell refused to drop the machete and came at one of the deputies.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy fired a taser at Powell, but he continued to come forward. The deputy then shot Powell.
Powell was taken to Henderson Deaconess Hospital but died on the way. No officers were injured in the incident, according to KSP.
KSP is investigating the shooting, which is routine when law enforcement officers are involved in shootings.
“KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation,” the agency said in a news release. “To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.”
The incident was the second fatal police shooting in as many days in Kentucky. On Sunday, a KSP trooper shot and killed a man in Harrison County who was previously involved in a trespassing incident and a hit-and-run collision earlier in the night.
