Western Kentucky farmer scratches off $10K lottery win, then four more like it

A man in Western Kentucky initially thought he’d won $10,000 playing the lottery’s Millionaire Club scratch-off game, only to discover later the true prize was five times that amount.

Cameron Greenwell of Union County was scratching off the ticket during a lunch break, at first only revealing the top part of the ticket.

“I scratch the top part of the ticket for matching numbers, and the first one was the win of $10,000 so I figured that was it,” he told the Kentucky Lottery, according to a July 30 news release from the agency.

Greenwell folded the ticket in half, tucked it into his pocket and climbed onto his tractor to get back to work. Hours later, at home while printing out a form to claim his prize, Greenwell scratched off the rest of the ticket.

“That’s when I saw that I hit four ‘500X’ $20 boxes,” Greenwell told the lottery.

Stunned by the revelation, Greenwell then checked the Kentucky Lottery’s mobile phone app, scanning his ticket three times to make sure it was correct.

Greenwell recently made the trip to Kentucky Lottery headquarters in Louisville to collect his winnings, a requirement for large prize amounts. After taxes, his payout was $36,000. Greenwell said he plans to save some of the money and use the rest for farming equipment and supplies.

The Kentucky Lottery’s $50 Millionaire Club ticket launched in September 2023. It has a top prize of $1 million, with the lowest prize amount being $75. Winning the top prize is attached to consolidated odds of 1 in 540,000, per the game’s official rules.

Other recent Kentucky Lottery wins include an Estill County man who won big playing a set of numbers that were sentimental to him.
