The only Kentucky home known to be designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is up for sale, and it can be yours to the tune of $775,000.

The Zeigler House, located at 509 Shelby St. in Frankfort, was designed by Wright in 1910, in the early stage of the pioneering architect’s career. It has been put up for sale by owners Ashli and Ryan Watts, according to Bradley Bringardner of Lenihan Sotheby’s International Realty.

“As lifelong Kentuckians, we have loved living in the only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Kentucky, located right next to the Capitol. It has been a wonderful, warm home for our family and we are excited for the next owners who get to experience living in this piece of art,” a statement to the Herald-Leader from the home’s sellers reads.

Known for creating more than 1,000 architectural works — 532 of which were realized — Wright’s career spanned seven decades before his death in 1959. He’s best known for developing the design philosophy of “organic architecture,” when a building is completely in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Wright’s most iconic works include Fallingwater in Pennsylvania and the Robie House in Chicago.

Designed in the same year Wright completed the Robie House, the Zeigler House shares its singular Prairie style, which is defined by dramatic horizontal lines and masses that echo the natural landscape of America’s Midwest.

The Zeigler House underwent a detailed restoration in 1992, according to its Realtor.com listing. It features four bedrooms and two full bathrooms, with the house totaling 2,703 square feet.

“Classic Wright design elements are showcased throughout: ribbons of art glass windows, original cabinetry with art glass doors, cantilevered balconies, horizontal lines, and wide overhangs, as well as the central Roman brick fireplace with its distinctive illuminated cabinet — unique to this home,” the home’s listing states.

The home has 13 rooms in all, and almost every one of them opens to the outdoors, reflecting Wright’s philosophy, according to the listing.

The main level has a living room, dining room, butler’s pantry and kitchen. A glass-enclosed porch offers views of the backyard, inspired by landscape architect and Wright contemporary Jens Jensen. The four bedrooms are upstairs, including a suite with a fireplace, sitting porch and a large private deck perched in the tree canopy.

The home itself is two blocks from the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol building.

Franklin County property valuation records show the Zeigler House has had several owners over the years. The Watts acquired it in May 2023 for $542,000, records from the county’s property valuation administrator show.

Here’s a look inside the home, featuring photos shared with the listing agency’s permission.
