Deadline to apply for FEMA assistance extended for KY April flood victims
The deadline to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance has been extended for Kentucky residents impacted by April’s catastrophic flooding event, according to a FEMA news release.
The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is now July 25, extended by one month.
The flooding came after as much as 15 inches of rain fell on some parts of Kentucky, killing seven people, damaging homes and businesses, closing hundreds of roads, forcing evacuations and leading communities to conserve water.
Gov. Andy Beshear sent a major disaster declaration to President Donald Trump on April 11, and it was approved two weeks later. Beshear later added more counties to the declaration, and that request was approved by Trump in mid-May.
The additional approved counties brought the total number of counties eligible for FEMA individual assistance to 37.
FEMA’s Individual Assistance and Households Program provides finances and services for eligible individuals and households affected by a disaster. Financial assistance can include funds for temporary housing, home repair or replacement, and other uninsured or under-insured expenses.
People in the approved counties are encouraged to file insurance claims before requesting FEMA assistance. FEMA said individual aid cannot duplicate insurance benefits or other forms of assistance.
How to apply for FEMA support
Families in the 37 approved counties for individual assistance can apply for support at a FEMA disaster recovery center. Locations and hours of the disaster recovery centers in the approved counties can be found on the governor’s website.
Residents can also apply for assistance online at disasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA at 800-621-FEMA (3362). People can also use the FEMA app to apply for assistance.
