A public school district in Kentucky canceled classes last minute Thursday morning, citing hazardous road conditions.

In a post on Facebook around 7 a.m., Madison County Schools said classes would be canceled for all students Jan. 22 due to unexpected black ice on area roads.

“We apologize for the very late notice. Today will be NTI Day 5,” the post reads. “We were not expecting the widespread black ice that has developed across our county. In the interest of everyone’s safety, today will be NTI Day 5. Again, we apologize for the very late notice.”

The cancellation comes during a week of harsh winter weather across Central Kentucky. Snow and sleet backed up traffic and made roads slick early Wednesday and Thursday during the morning commute, and an incoming “prolonged” winter storm is expected this weekend.
