Forecast: Fayette County now under a winter storm warning. Snow, cold on the way.

A large amount of snow and bitterly cold temperatures are expected to arrive in Lexington on Thursday.

According to Louisville’s branch of the National Weather Service, Fayette County is under a winter storm warning from 10 a.m. Thursday to 10 p.m. Thursday evening. NWS upgraded Fayette County’s status from a winter storm advisory to a winter storm warning at approximately 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Several other south-central and eastern counties fall under the same winter storm warning, including Woodford, Clark, Bourbon and Madison Counties.

NWS is predicting heavy snowfall with accumulations of four-six inches in Lexington. Parts of southern Kentucky could see even more snow.

Snow is projected to start falling just before 11 a.m. Thursday in Lexington and stop roughly eight hours later, according to NWS. The heaviest snowfall will take place between 1-6 p.m., per NWS.

Following the snowfall will be brutally cold temperatures. NWS forecasts temperatures as low as eight degrees Friday morning, with the wind chill producing values between negative-five and five degrees.

WKYT’s latest forecast predicts four-to-eight inches of snow and wind chill temperatures at or below zero degrees for early Friday morning.

Lexington streets and roads crews have been preparing for the storm since Tuesday. Workers have already applied brine to many streets and has two barns full of salt to combat potentially dangerous roadways.

Fayette County and many other schools districts have already canceled classes for Thursday in advance of the storm.
