In these crazy days we live in, it’s hard for readers to break through the constant stream of information bombarding them in all directions.
As those writing the stories, we feel that frustration, too. That’s why we’re announcing a new Herald-Leader newsletter titled “Bluegrass Voices,” focused on getting our opinion pages straight out to people who want them most.

As a columnist, I’m excited to get my work out directly to readers, along with the very fine writers who grace our opinion pages, people like religion writer Paul Prather, economics expert Jason Bailey, a range of state legislators and parent company McClatchy’s national desk of opinion writers. All of them provide clarity and context to the constant stream of current events in our cities, state, country and around the world.
I’m also hoping to write about items that might not make into a column: political observances, the background about how I report my columns, overlooked community events, and if you’ll excuse the indulgence, books I love. The newsletter will feature perspectives and writings you won’t find anywhere else.
The newsletter also can become a good venue for us to interact more directly with readers, and hear more about what you’d like to read or the issues we need to be paying more attention to.
Bluegrass Voices will appear in your inbox every Thursday at noon, featuring a weekly roundup of the opinion pieces, editorials, and letters from the week before. It’s timely, too: As 2026 primaries draw near, the newsletter will provide all the candidate endorsements and other election-related news you’ll need most.
