Kentucky vs. Louisville: Keep track of every Cats-Cards collision in every sport
With the UK athletics fall season now in full swing, it’s time for several rivalry matchups between Kentucky and Louisville to be renewed.
For the 2022-23 school year, all athletic contests between the Cats and Cards will be listed here, with updates provided as the games, matches and meets are scheduled and go final.
Here’s your one-stop shop for all the matchups between UK and U of L for the 2022-23 school year.
Kentucky vs. Louisville matchups are listed in chronological order.
Men’s soccer
Kentucky men’s soccer won against Louisville on Sept. 6, 3-2, at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington.
The match marked the first athletic contest between UK and U of L during the 2022-23 school year.
This was the 28th all-time meeting between Kentucky and Louisville, with the Wildcats holding a 15-8-5 (W-L-D) record against the Cardinals.
UK has now won three straight matches against Louisville.
Women’s golf
Both Kentucky and Louisville competed Sept. 12-13 in the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, South Carolina.
The event was a 54-hole, stroke-play tournament.
Kentucky finished in 14th place, while Louisville finished in 17th place. The Wildcats were 14 shots better than the Cardinals.
An even more dominant win for Kentucky over Louisville came in October at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in North Carolina.
Kentucky won the tournament — its second consecutive tournament win — while Louisville finished in a tie for fifth place, 23 shots behind the Wildcats.
Last season, Kentucky and Louisville had a head-to-head matchup in Naples, Florida, that ended in a 4-4 tie in a match-play format. Since Louisville won the most recent head-to-head meeting between the schools in 2019, the Cardinals retained the Battle of the Bluegrass cup.
Volleyball
Louisville defeated Kentucky, 3-2, in a five-set volleyball thriller on Sept. 14 at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington.
The match was broadcast to a national television audience on ESPN, marking just the fourth time in 25 years that regular season NCAA volleyball was broadcast on the network.
The match result marked the second straight year that U of L has defeated UK in a five-set match.
Kentucky has still won nine of the last 12 meetings in the series dating back to 2011.
All time, Kentucky has a 31-27 record against Louisville on the volleyball court.
Men’s golf
Both Kentucky and Louisville took part in the Bearcat Invitational on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati.
The tournament was a 54-hole event played on a par-71, 7,279-yard course.
Louisville finished in third place at five shots under par. UK finished in ninth place at 13 shots over par.
Cross country
Both the Kentucky men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in the Live in Lou Classic on Saturday, Oct. 1, at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville.
Jonah Mitchell led UK with an 85th place finish on the men’s side, while DeAnna Martin finished in 101st place on the women’s side.
Kentucky didn’t send a full men’s team to the event, while the women’s team finished in 31st place out of 41 teams. The Louisville women’s team finished in 33rd.
The NCAA Southeast Regional is also scheduled to be in Louisville this fall. It will be held on Friday, Nov. 11.
Football
Kentucky football will face Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Kroger Field in Lexington.
UK’s highly anticipated 2022 regular season will conclude with the Governor’s Cup matchup against the Cardinals.
UK won last season’s meeting with U of L in dominant fashion, as the Cats stomped the Cards, 52-21, in Louisville. Kentucky has won three straight games in the series, and four of the last five.
UK head coach Mark Stoops holds a 4-4 record against Louisville as Kentucky head coach.
All time, Kentucky has an 18-15 record against Louisville on the gridiron.
Women’s basketball
Kentucky will face Louisville in Lexington on Dec. 11, according to the non-conference schedule announced last week by U of L. UK has not yet revealed its non-conference slate. No tip-off time for the Sunday game has yet been set.
After a year apart, the UK and Louisville women’s basketball programs resumed their rivalry in 2021, with Louisville emerging 64-58 winners at the KFC Yum Center last December.
Kentucky leads the all-time series against Louisville, 34-23, but UK hasn’t beaten Louisville since December 2015.
Men’s basketball
Kentucky men’s basketball will face Louisville at Noon Saturday, Dec. 31, at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
The annual men’s basketball rivalry matchup between Kentucky and Louisville wasn’t played last year due to positive COVID-19 results in the Louisville program.
Louisville won the most recent meeting between the schools in December 2020, as former U of L coach Chris Mack oversaw a 62-59 Cardinals victory inside the KFC Yum Center in Louisville.
Storylines abound for the latest meeting between the Cardinals and Wildcats, from new Louisville head coach and former Kentucky assistant coach Kenny Payne, to the backdrop of the recruitment of star guard DJ Wagner by both schools.
All time, Kentucky has a 37-17 record against Louisville in men’s basketball.
Swimming and diving
Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving will face Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington.
Last season, both the Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated by Louisville on the road.
In January 2021, the Kentucky women’s swimming and diving team posted a dominant 200.5-99.5 win over Louisville, which marked UK’s largest triumph over U of L under current head coach Lars Jorgensen. The UK women’s team won 13 of 16 possible events at that meet.
Softball
Kentucky will begin its 2023 season by playing in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Lead-Off Classic in February, and one of UK’s first games will be against Louisville.
UK will face Louisville at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Florida. The game against Louisville will be UK’s second game of the season.
Potential on-campus matchups between UK and U of L on the softball diamond have not yet been announced.
In April, Kentucky scored a 9-0, run-rule victory over the Cardinals in Louisville. Pitcher Stephanie Schoonover tossed a no-hitter for UK in the win.
All time, Kentucky leads the series with U of L, 22-20. The Wildcats have won five of the last six games in the series dating to 2016.
Not yet announced
Several other sports are expected to feature rivalry meetings between UK and Louisville this school year, but dates for those matchups haven’t been announced yet.
These include:
▪ Baseball: Last season, Kentucky baseball had its home game against U of L rained out. The Cardinals won the lone meeting between the schools in April in Louisville, 4-2.
All-time, Kentucky leads Louisville in the series, 72-49-1. This doesn’t count listed games against the likes of Louisville AC, Louisville HS, Louisville Male HS and Louisville Manual HS.
▪ Tennis: In January, UK men’s tennis swept Louisville, 4-0. Kentucky is 44-3-1 all-time against Louisville since the teams first played in 1925, and UK is a perfect 27-0 against U of L since the Cardinals had their inaugural varsity season in 1982-83.
The UK women’s tennis program is also perfect all-time against Louisville, as the Cats hold a 15-0 record against the Cardinals. UK women’s tennis hasn’t played Louisville in a dual match since 2008.
▪ Track and field: Last December at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Kentucky won 22 of 36 events. This performance was highlighted by UK track and field legend Abby Steiner breaking the 300-meter collegiate record.
