Kentucky’s Gilgeous-Alexander trying out for Canada’s U-19 team

University of Kentucky freshman Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Wednesday joined a growing list of Wildcats who could be headed to Egypt this summer.

Gilgeous-Alexander was among 22 athletes invited to attend tryouts for Canada’s U-19 national basketball team. The tryouts are scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Mississauga, a city in Ontario, Canada.

The team Canada selects after the tryouts will take part in the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup in Cairo, Egypt from July 1-9.

Three Wildcats will try out beginning this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the United States’ U-19 squad coached by Kentucky’s John Calipari. Those three are freshmen Hamidou Diallo, Kevin Knox and PJ Washington.

Previously, Kentucky sophomore Tai Wynyard was chosen to play for New Zealand’s team in the World Cup.

Gilgeous-Alexander, a 6-foot-5 guard, signed with the Wildcats last fall. Originally from Canada, Gilgeous-Alexander most recently played for Hamilton Heights (Tenn.), where he averaged 20.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.5 steals per game last season.
