Final AP college basketball poll is out. UK a top-10 team when the music stopped.
The Associated Press released its final Top 25 men’s college basketball poll of the 2019-20 season on Wednesday, and Kentucky ended up at No. 8.
The rankings, voted on by media members around the nation, represent one final set of opinions on a college basketball season cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
When the regular season ended, most of the postseason conference tournaments were called off, and that was soon followed by the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament.
Since we’ll never have the opportunity to see this year’s top teams battle on the court for a championship, opinion is all we’ll ever have to document the 2019-20 season.
In the opinion of the nation’s media, Kansas finished as the No. 1 team in the land. The Jayhawks (28-3) secured 63 of a possible 65-first-place votes in the final AP poll. No. 2 Gonzaga and No. 3 Dayton each received one first-place vote.
It’s the fourth time since the inception of the men’s poll for the 1946-47 season that Kansas finished on top, though typically there would still be March Madness to play. The AP does not declare a national champion in the sport because of the tournament.
The final rankings were based on play through March 11, when the outbreak of the coronavirus brought the sport to a halt.
ACC champion Florida State and Baylor completed the top five. Also finishing ahead of Kentucky were No. 6 San Diego State and No. 7 Creighton.
Kentucky (25-6) won the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship. The Wildcats were also ranked No. 8 in the most recent rankings that came out on March 9. UK did not have a chance to play another game thereafter.
Louisville (24-7) finished in a three-way for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cardinals moved up one spot from the most recent rankings, climbing from No. 15 to No. 14.
Only one other team from the SEC joined Kentucky in the Top 25. Auburn finished at No. 20.
