For a time Tuesday, Louisville ran the Kentucky men’s basketball team nearly off the floor.
Buoyed by the best player on the court — freshman guard Mikel Brown Jr. — the Cardinals built a 20-point lead that proved to be enough to stave off a strong Wildcat rally and some spotty free-throw shooting from the home team.
Ultimately, Brown proved too much for No. 9 Kentucky to overcome. He scored 29 points on 8-for-16 shooting and hit 10 of 11 free throws. He had five assists and one turnover on a night when the Cats (2-1) struggled to get much ball pressure. No. 12 Louisville (3-0) had only six turnovers and outscored Kentucky 19-10 on points off turnovers.
U of L missed six straight free throws in the final 51 seconds before making its final attempt. Kentucky didn’t score in that span.
The Cards committed turnovers on 8.1% of their possessions, Kentucky on 18.7%.
Denzel Aberdeen had 26 points in 25 minutes to lead Kentucky. The Wildcats outscored the Cardinals by a point in his minutes on the floor.
