Kentucky women’s basketball has second SEC game postponed due to COVID-19
For the second time this season, the Kentucky women’s basketball program has had its opening game in Southeastern Conference play postponed due to COVID-19 issues.
This time, those issues are within UK’s own program.
It was announced Saturday morning that Monday night’s game against Mississippi State at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington will be postponed due to “a combination of positive tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals within the Kentucky women’s basketball program.”
A new date for the game has not yet been announced.
The SEC updated its policies for basketball game postponements, cancellations, rescheduling of games and no-contest declarations in late December.
Kentucky’s original SEC opener, against Auburn last Thursday night, was also postponed due to COVID issues in the Tigers’ program. That game has not yet been rescheduled, either.
Overall, this is the third COVID-related postponement of the season for UK. A non-conference home game against Morgan State — scheduled for Dec. 17 — was called off due to COVID issues in the Bears’ program.
As of now, Kentucky is scheduled to return to the hardwood on Thursday night for a home game against Georgia.
Kentucky hasn’t played since a Dec. 19 home win over South Carolina Upstate.
The Wildcats are 7-3 overall this season and are ranked No. 20 by the Associated Press.
SEC play began for conference teams last Thursday night, but four games were canceled that night due to COVID issues.
