University of Kentucky quarterback Lynn Bowden was named the Lexington Herald-Leader’s 2019 Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year in January.

On Tuesday night, in front of a Rupp Arena basketball crowd, the UK junior was presented the award by Herald-Leader executive editor and general manager Peter Baniak and sports editor Mathew Graf.

Bowden received a framed Herald-Leader newspaper page highlighting his 2019 accomplishments and accolades during a timeout in Tuesday night’s Kentucky-Tennessee men’s basketball game. Bowden then received an appreciative roar from the Rupp Arena crowd.

Bowden produced one of the most improbable success stories in the commonwealth’s college football history in 2019, moving from wide receiver to quarterback after UK’s signal-caller ranks were decimated by injury. He led a 2-3 team at the time to an 8-5 overall record that concluded with a dramatic 37-30 victory over Virginia Tech in the Belk Bowl.

Bowden, running a read-option offense, rushed for a Southeastern Conference best 1,468 yards in 2019.

The Youngstown, Ohio, native beat out Baltimore Ravens quarterback and former University of Louisville star Lamar Jackson and ex-Murray State basketball standout Ja Morant by collecting 150 of the 169 first-place votes cast by Kentucky media members.
