UK won’t have a spring game or pro day, but SEC doesn’t shut door on practices
The University of Kentucky will not play a spring football game, nor will any other program in the league.
The Southeastern Conference on Tuesday announced the cancellation of all remaining athletic competitions during the 2019-20 school year. The announcement specifically noted that spring football games and football pro days conducted by member schools will not be allowed.
Other athletic activities, including practices, meetings and other gatherings remain suspended through April 15, as announced last week. All the changes are in response to the COVID-19, or coronavirus, pandemic.
“This is a difficult day for all of us, and I am especially disappointed for our student-athletes,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. “The health and well-being of our entire conference community is an ongoing priority for the SEC as we continue to monitor developments and information about the COVID-19 virus.”
UK’s annual Blue-White Spring Game was scheduled for April 12, a date previously under suspension before Tuesday’s announcement.
The Atlantic Coast Conference, of which Louisville is a member, canceled all athletic competitions and other related activities earlier Tuesday.
