Somerset High School quarterback Kaiya Sheron commits to Kentucky

The University of Kentucky football program had its spring season shuttered last week after just a few practices, but it still made a big gain in March.

Somerset High School quarterback Kaiya Sheron committed to UK on Monday. Brian Milam of WKYT first reported Sheron’s commitment.

Sheron announced his commitment on Twitter shortly after WKYT reported the news. His only other reported offers were from Marshall and Eastern Kentucky. He is rated as a three-star prospect in the class of 2021 by 247Sports and Rivals.

Sheron, whose first name is pronounced like “Kayak” without the “-ak” and whose last name is pronounced like the first name “Sharon,” threw for 3,218 yards and 28 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions last year at Somerset. He completed 178 of 260 pass attempts, was also the Briar Jumpers’ leading rusher (959 yards) and scored 8 TDs on the ground.

Somerset won its first state championship last year in dramatic fashion. After leading most of the game, it lost a 28-17 lead over Mayfield and trailed 31-28 with 28 seconds to play. A pass-interference penalty in the end zone against the Cardinals allowed Somerset to play an untimed down, on which Sheron to threw the game-winning pass.

The Southeastern Conference canceled the remainder of its spring sports season, including spring football practices and intrasquad scrimmages, as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. The NCAA instituted a recruiting dead period through April 15, banning off- and on-campus visits with prospects, but coaches are permitted to recruit virtually via calls and written correspondence.

Sheron is the fourth player in the 2021 class to commit to UK, joining linebacker Devon Williams and offensive linemen Paul Rodriguez and David Wohlabaugh.
