The new-look Kentucky football team opened its season with a 24-16 win against Toledo on Saturday that wasn’t always smooth offensively but was enough to hold off a team expected to give the Wildcats a challenge.
Kentucky — with 24 transfers and a roster on which more than half the players had never suited up at UK — improved to 10-3 in season openers under coach Mark Stoops, who moved to 12-0 in his career against MAC opponents.
Toledo, the preseason favorite to win the MAC, came to Lexington with high expectations and a dark-horse College Football Playoff contender label. But in a game in which both teams struggled to move the ball consistently, the Rockets didn’t find an offensive rhythm until the fourth quarter, when the two teams each scored 14 points.
