It wasn’t exactly Tim Couch vs. Payton Manning, but if you like your football with some passing flash, Kentucky and Tennessee played to your taste Saturday night at Kroger Field.
If you were hoping for the Wildcats to win an SEC game, you were left wanting.
Tennessee routed Kentucky 56-34 on a night when each team’s quarterback stacked passing stats.
The Volunteers’ Joey Aguilar threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns, connecting on 20 of 26 passes, including completions of 35, 47, 62, 50 and 56 yards. Kentucky’s Cutter Boley did his best to keep the Cats close, throwing for a UK freshman record five TDs and completing 26 of 35 passes for 330 yards with an interception.
UK had two wide receivers with more than 100 receiving yards: freshman DJ Miller (five catches, 120 yards, two touchdowns) and senior Alabama transfer Kendrick Law (two catches, 103 yards, one TD).
Kentucky (2-5, 0-5 SEC) snapped a streak of 13 consecutive league games it which it had failed to score at least three offensive touchdowns, and the Cats trailed 28-21 with 1:37 to play in the first half. But the Volunteers (6-2, 3-2) raced to a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in 1:32 to take a 14-point lead into halftime and never looked back.
