Two weeks ago, Kentucky football was in its deepest, darkest spot of the season.
Suddenly, you can look at the Wildcats in a new light.
UK won its second straight game Saturday night, blowing out Florida 38-7 at Kroger Field a week after eking out a 10-3 win at Auburn. Those two wins — on the heels of a 56-34 home loss to Tennessee — have come against teams facing challenging circumstances. Auburn would fire coach Hugh Freeze the next day, and Florida came to Lexington under the direction of interim coach Billy Gonzales, the replacement for fired Billy Napier.
But Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has had his own hot-seat scuttlebutt, and the Wildcats have responded.
Saturday was Kentucky’s highest-scoring game against Florida since a 40-6 win Nov. 4, 1950, and the fewest points it had allowed the Gators to score since Nov. 15, 1986, when UK beat Florida 10-3.
Kentucky running back Dante Dowdell carried seven times for 104 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown run. Seth McGowan had 92 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Cutter Boley completed 18 of 23 passes for 168 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Boley completed passes to 10 different targets, including touchdown tosses to wide receiver J.J. Hester and running back Jason Patterson.
The Wildcats held the Gators to 247 yards of total offense, forced four turnovers — including three interceptions of Florida starting quarterback DJ Lagway — and didn’t allow a point in the final three quarters of the game.
