Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Issac Cano is Player of the Year in Lexington boys’ high school soccer, according to votes gathered by the Herald-Leader for the 2021 All-City Boys’ Soccer Team from the city’s nine coaches.

Cano, a senior forward, helped lead the Bulldogs to this year’s KHSAA boys’ state soccer championship, the fifth state crown for the program, and had a goal and an assist in the title game, a 2-1 win over Covington Catholic. He was named the tournament’s most valuable player. He led Dunbar with 34 goals and 10 assists this season.

Dunbar had three first-team selections, the most of any school, as Kasen Johnston and Reese Calhoon joined Cano for top honors. Lexington Catholic’s Catesby Clay took second in the voting and was joined by teammate Wells Durham. Rounding out the first team were Henry Clay’s Zakariah Shendera and Markieus Hill Jr., Frederick Douglass’ Cooper Ranvier, Bryan Station’s Evan Amend, Lexington Christian’s Zach Workman and Lafayette’s Angel Montiel.

Here are Lexington’s 2021 All-City Boys’ Soccer Teams. Players were nominated and voted on by the city’s coaches who ranked their first- and second-team choices with 22 points allotted to their player of the year, 21 to the next player, etc.
