The Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com are proud to present the 2022 All-City boys’ high school basketball teams and player of the year as voted on by the nine coaches of Lexington’s varsity KHSAA programs.

The Lexington Player of the Year goes to Henry Clay’s Aziel Blackwell. The 6-foot-2 senior guard helped the Blue Devils win the 11th Region championship and reach the Boys’ Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005. He averaged 17.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Blackwell received three player-of-the-year votes from the city’s coaches, the most among a quality field of nominees. Fellow first-teamer Reece Potter of Lexington Catholic got the next most with two, with one each going to Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Nick Spalding, Bryan Station’s J’Marious Lindsay, Frederick Douglass’s Kai Simpson and Sayre’s Zander Collett.

Also joining Blackwell on the First Team were Henry Clay teammate, Kanye Henderson, and Douglass’s Tyson Barrett.

The nine varsity boys’ basketball coaches in Lexington were asked to nominate players for All-City consideration. Later, the coaches were asked to rank, one through 10, their top players from that list of nominees (they were not permitted to vote for their own players). Point values were assigned to each voting position (10 points for first-place votes, nine points for second-place votes, etc.) and the accumulation of those points was used to create the First and Second Teams.
