Coaches name 2025 All-11th Region boys basketball team
Great Crossing’s Malachi Moreno, the 6-foot-10 center committed to Kentucky, earned his second 11th Region player of the year honor this month and third of his career as the region’s coaches announced their all-region team and coaches of the year on Tuesday.
Last week, Moreno earned the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches’ region player of the year award and with it a nomination for the sport’s highest individual honor for a senior, Mr. Basketball.
On Tuesday, the 11th Region’s coaches in a separate vote to themselves, unanimously voted Moreno as their player of the year in conjunction with their All-11th Region team. He also received the award last season. Unlike the KABC award, Tuesday’s honor is not limited to seniors.
Moreno has averaged 22 points and 14.6 rebounds this season for the No. 2 Warhawks, one of the favorites to win the 11th Region championship and contend for a Boys’ Sweet 16 title.
The coaches had more trouble with their coach of the year pick, settling on a four-way tie among Frederick Douglass’ Murray Garvin, Sayre’s Rob Goodman, Frankfort’s Ed McKinney and Great Crossing’s Steve Page.
Garvin has led the Broncos to a No. 3 ranking in the state and top seed in the 42nd District. Goodman brought Sayre to the All “A” Classic for the second year in a row. McKinney helped the Panthers (23-8) rebound from a 6-21 campaign last year. Page has the Warhawks (28-6) in contention to defend their 11th Region title beginning next week.
Joining Moreno on the first team was teammate Vince Dawson III. Frederick Douglass, Henry Clay and Sayre each also had two players receiving top honors.
First-team awards will be presented between the boys 11th Region Tournament semifinals on Saturday, March 8, at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
