The 2025 Lexington Herald-Leader All-State Girls Basketball Teams are here

The Herald-Leader is proud to announce its 2025 All-State Girls Basketball Teams as voted on by high school coaches across the commonwealth.

Sacred Heart’s ZaKiyah Johnson, a 6-foot forward signed with Louisiana State and recently honored as this year’s Miss Kentucky Basketball, tops our All-State list as Herald-Leader Girls Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season.

Johnson garnered 93 player of the year votes and appeared on 104 of the 108 ballots submitted by the state’s girls high school coaches. With Sacred Heart’s ninth overall Girls’ Sweet 16 title and unprecedented fifth straight, Johnson earner her fourth straight state tournament most valuable player honor to go with her fourth consecutive pick as Kentucky Gatorade player of the year.

Second in the voting was Bethlehem’s Leah Macy, a 6-2 Notre Dame signee who had her season cut short by injury at this year’s All “A” Classic small-school tournament. Macy got four player of the year nods. Fellow first-teamers, Grace Mbugua of Danville Christian, Peyton Bradley of Meade County, Brooke Nichelson of North Laurel and Lainey Johnson of Anderson County, got one top vote each.

The Herald-Leader All-State Teams are based on coaches’ selections in a statewide survey conducted by the Lexington Herald-Leader/Kentucky.com. Players are listed in order of point totals based on coaches’ votes. There are three teams of 10 players, plus 20 honorable mentions.

Sacred Heart’s ZaKiyah Johnson (11) was named Kentucky’s Miss Basketball and led the Valkyries to their fifth consecutive state championship this season.

Methodology: Our annual All-State survey was emailed to 266 Kentucky high school varsity girls basketball coaches using their email registered with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Multiple attempts were made to encourage every school to participate. Coaches were asked to select their top 10 players, and points were assigned based on a player’s position on the ballot (10 points for Player of the Year, nine points for No. 2, eight points for No. 3, etc.), and tabulated across all ballots received. The top 50 players receiving votes made our All-State list. This year, 108 coaches participated and all 16 regions were represented.
