Lexington Catholic, LCA girls reclaim indoor track titles in record setting week
Lexington Catholic and Lexington Christian cleaned up in their respective classes at this week’s KHSAA State Indoor Track and Field Championships in Louisville with their girls teams going three for three as state champions since the event was first held in 2024.
Knights soccer standout Joanna Bryant, a Miami (Ohio) signee in that sport, broke her own Class 2A state indoor mark in the 400-meter dash, won the 200 meters and ran legs in Lexington Catholic’s first place 4-by-400- and 4-by-800-meter relays.
In the 400, Bryant, who suffered an ankle injury that knocked her out of the state soccer finals last fall, ran the distance in 57.91 seconds, beating the 2A mark she set in 2024 by 1.42 seconds.
That was just one of dozens of class and overall state indoor records broken by boys and girls high school athletes competing at Louisville’s Norton Sports and Learning Center. The Class A meet was held Tuesday, the Class 3A meet Wednesday and the Class 2A meet Thursday.
In Class 3A, Frederick Douglass junior Kaden John set class and state overall records in winning the 55 meters in 6.4 seconds and the 3A record in the 200 meters with a time of 21.62. Lafayette senior Xavier Richardson, the leader of the Generals’ two-time state champion cross-country team, set a new overall indoor record in the 800 with a time of 1:53.48.
In Class A, Lexington Christian’s Kennedy Moughamian knocked more than a second off her A record in the 3,200 at 11:20.36, and also won the 1,600 with a time of 5:02.78.
Lexington Christian’s haul in Class A
In addition to Moughamian, LCA swept all three girls relays and set an A indoor record in the 4-by-400 with the 4:12.49 run by the team of Annie Sewell, Hadley Raisor, Laynie Hopper and Violet Griese.
Raisor, Sewell and Griese joined June Karls in the 4-by-800 win. Laynie Hopper was joined by Lindsay Joseph, Ann Reese Hopper and Mahari Crump in the 4-by-200 win.
LCA finished first and second in three individual races with Anna Reese Hopper taking the 55-meter dash ahead of Crump, Raisor winning the 800 ahead of Sewell and Moughamian winning the 3,200 ahead of Karls.
On the boys’ side, LCA’s Kyle Stickel won the 800 with a 1:59.70 and the Eagles’ 4-by-400 relay team of Robert Black, Sam Pearson, Paxton Gray and Cecil Hollen took first with a 3:31.67. The LCA boys team finished fourth overall behind Beechwood, Bishop Brossart and Owensboro Catholic.
Lexington Catholic grabs 9 individual titles overall
Lexington Catholic’s boys team also had a couple of record-breaking performances Thursday.
Liam Havens set a new 2A mark in the 400 with a winning time of 50.12 and was part of a 2A record 4-by-800 relay time of 8:12.13 along with Asher Feddock, Mark Reinhart and Coen Noble.
Feddock won the 800 with a time of 1:59.65.
Lexington Catholic’s Abigail Turner ran the 1,600 in 5:03.54 for one of the girls’ team’s six victories.
Joining Bryant on the winning 4-by-800 were Sarah Scott, Abby Etherington and Ainsley Adair. Scott and Bryant ran with Wells Moore and Abigail Turner on the 4-by-400 winner. The Knights’ 4-by-200 relay champions were Zoe Cliburn, Lily Knopp, Savanah Kennedy and Emme Peterson.
Other notables from Central Kentucky
- Great Crossing’s 4-by-400 relay team of Joshua Holt-Smith, Dylan Russell, Zion Gonzales and Ray Enwa set a new Class 3A and overall state mark in that event with a time of 3:23.35, 2.6 seconds faster than Trinity’s 2024 record.
- Bourbon County’s Christopher Wells swept the Class 2A boys distance races Thursday with a 4:21.55 in the 1,600 and a 9:33.98 in the 3,200.
- Mercer County’s Ralasia Piazza set a new 2A mark in the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 1 inch.
- George Rogers Clark’s Bailey Howard won the Class 3A pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 6 inches.
