The Herald-Leader is proud to announce its 2022 All-State Girls’ Basketball Teams as voted on by high school coaches across the commonwealth.

Sacred Heart’s ZaKiyah Johnson, who earlier this month was named the most valuable player of the Mingua Beef Jerky Girls’ Sweet 16 as a freshman, garnered the most points among our 50 All-State honorees to become the Herald-Leader’s Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

Johnson, a 6-foot guard/forward, averaged 17.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and helped the Valkyries defend their state title. She obtained 38 player of the year votes and appeared on 80 of 106 ballots submitted by coaches participating in the Herald-Leader’s all-state survey.

Bullitt East’s Gracie Merkle, a Bellarmine commit, finished second in the voting and earned 19 player of the year votes. Anderson County’s Amiya Jenkins, a Kentucky commit who was chosen the state’s Miss Basketball last week, finished third and received 24 player of the year votes. The Miss Basketball title is an honor reserved for seniors.

Rounding out the Herald-Leader’s first team are seniors Cassidy Rowe of Shelby Valley, Josie Gilvin of Sacred Heart and Allie Stone of West Carter, as well as juniors Haven Ford of Rowan County and Kensley Feltner of Lawrence County, sophomore Trinity Rowe of Pikeville and freshman Leah Macy of Mercy.

The Herald-Leader All-State Teams are based on coaches’ selections in a statewide survey conducted by the Lexington Herald-Leader/Kentucky.com. Players are listed in order of point totals based on coaches’ votes. There are three teams of 10 players, plus 20 honorable mentions.

Methodology: Our annual All-State survey was emailed to all 273 KHSAA girls’ basketball coaches in Kentucky using their email registered with the KHSAA. Multiple attempts were made to encourage every school to participate. Coaches were asked to select their top 10 players and points were assigned based on a player’s position on the ballot (10 points for Player of the Year, nine points for No. 2, eight points for No. 3, etc.), and tabulated across all ballots received. The top 50 players receiving votes made our All-State list. This year, 106 coaches participated.
