The Herald-Leader is proud to announce its 2022 All-State Boys’ Basketball Teams as voted on by high school coaches across the commonwealth.

North Laurel’s Reed Sheppard, a 6-3 junior already committed to the University of Kentucky, garnered the most points among our 50 All-State honorees to become the Herald-Leader’s Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year.

Sheppard appeared on 111 of the 119 coaches’ surveys submitted and had 31 player of the year votes, the most in a competitive grouping at the top of the ballot results. Male’s Kaleb Glenn, a Louisville commit, ranked second, while Clark County’s Jerone Morton came in third. All three are juniors.

Bowling Green’s Turner Buttry, who last week earned Mr. Basketball honors as the state’s top senior, was fourth, followed by Lyon County sophomore Travis Perry.

Rounding out the first team are Covington Catholic junior point guard Evan Ipsaro, Ballard senior center Maker Bar, Robertson County senior Justin Becker, Ballard junior Gabe Sisk and Ashland Blazer senior Colin Porter.

The Herald-Leader All-State Teams are based on coaches’ selections in a statewide survey conducted by the Lexington Herald-Leader/Kentucky.com. Players are listed in order of point totals based on coaches’ votes. There are three teams of 10 players, plus 20 honorable mentions.

Methodology: Our annual All-State survey was emailed to all 275 KHSAA boys’ basketball coaches in Kentucky using their email registered with the KHSAA. Multiple attempts were made to encourage every school to participate. Coaches were asked to select their top 10 players and points were assigned based on a player’s position on the ballot (10 points for Player of the Year, nine points for No. 2, eight points for No. 3, etc.), and tabulated across all ballots received. The top 50 players receiving votes made our All-State list. This year, 119 coaches participated.
