Class 2A football finals preview: Mayfield vs. Somerset
It’s championship weekend for the 2019 UK Orthopaedics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl. Here’s a look at Saturday’s Class 2A state title game at Kroger Field.
Mayfield vs. Somerset
Kickoff: 1 p.m. Saturday
RPI ratings: No. 2 Mayfield (.75316); No. 3 Somerset (.75279)
Cantrall Ratings: No. 3 Mayfield (80.7); No. 1 Somerset (81.3)
Championship history: Mayfield (12-11) — The Cardinals have lost two straight title games, last winning the crown in 2015. Somerset (0-5) — The Briar Jumpers last appeared in the championship game in 2009.
How they got here: Mayfield (13-1) defeated No. 7 Beechwood 35-7 and took out No. 8 Murray in the district championship. Somerset (13-1) defeated No. 5 Breathitt County 40-25 and ousted No. 1 Lexington Christian in the district championship.
Quick hits: Mayfield’s only loss this season came in a 45-35 shootout to its Class 6A neighbor McCracken County. Somerset dropped its only game, 35-34, against district rival Lexington Christian and the Briar Jumpers were able to avenge that loss in the playoffs, 28-26. Somerset lost then-leading rusher Alex Smith to a broken leg in its sixth game. He’s still second in rushing yards on the team. Somerset QB Kaiya Sheron received an offer from Kentucky after a camp the summer after his freshman year.
Mayfield standouts: Jayden Stinson, Sr. QB (3,506 yards, 48 TDs passing); Kylan Galbreath, Jr. RB (1,575 yards, 18 TDs rushing); Kade Neely, Sr. WR, Louisville commit (1,221 yards, 20 TDs receiving); Diaz Perry, Sr. WR (738 yards, 10 TDs receiving); Alonzo Daniel, Sr. WR (658 yards, 10 TDs receiving); Jax Rogers, So. LB (120 tackles).
Somerset standouts: Kaiya Sheron, Jr. QB (3,043 yards, 27 TDs passing, 905 yards, eight TDs rushing); Kade Grundy, Jr. WR, Louisville baseball commit (1,390 yards, 15 TDs receiving); Cam Austin, Sr. RB (513 yards, seven TDs rushing, 307 yards one TD receiving); Jase Bruner, Sr. RB/LB, Kentucky commit (376 yards, six TDs rushing, 116 tackles, one sack); Mikey Garland, Jr. RB/LB (225 yards, nine TDs rushing, 85 tackles, two sacks).
