Updated odds and a new favorite after early wagering on the Breeders’ Cup Classic
Advance wagering for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday showed some love for a couple of 3-year-old contenders and offered an early peek at the marquee race for these world championships.
As of Friday at 7:15 p.m. , Travers Stakes winner Catholic Boy was the 3-1 favorite, based on a total of $32,903 wagered the day before the big race. That number came from on-track handle at Churchill Downs, as well select other outlets that had reported early wagering numbers as of Friday evening.
Another 3-year-old — the Bob Baffert-trained McKinzie — was next at 4-1. McKinize was 6-1 on the morning line, and Catholic Boy was 8-1 in those odds.
Morning-line favorite Accelerate was the next choice at 5-1 in early wagering, and no other Classic contender had odds shorter than 9-1.
The early wagering numbers Friday evening will be a small fraction of the total handle on Saturday’s Classic, which is set for a 5:44 p.m. post time and will be televised live on NBC.
