They wouldn’t call them long shots if we were all supposed to know.

Everyone feeling a little silly for not betting a couple of bucks on the longest shot in the field at Saturday’s 148th Kentucky Derby in Louisville can take solace in the fact they almost got it right.

Post-time favorite Epicenter finished second. Morning-line favorite Zandon finished third.

But it was the winner, 80-1 long shot Rich Strike, that nobody saw coming.

Trainer Eric Reed and jockey Sonny Leon became first-time Kentucky Derby winners as Rich Strike delivered the second-biggest upset in the history of the race. Donerail, in 1913, was a 91-1 shot.

In an event ruled by controversial Hall of Famer Bob Baffert in recent years, Rich Strike cleared the air on a cool and dreary evening at Churchill.

He paid $163.60 to win, $74.20 to place and $29.40 to show.

Second-place Epicenter paid $7.40 and $5.20.

Third-place Zandon paid $5.60.

Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike, front right, earned $1.86 million for just his second career victory. The colt finished third in his most recent race, the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park last month.
