Louisville wants to hold its own basketball bubble
Louisville wants to put together a basketball bubble.
U of L head coach Chris Mack tweeted n Friday that the school wants to stage a Division I basketball bubble with between eight and 12 teams from Nov. 25 through Dec. 5.
According to Mack, the bubble would be played in Louisville, with each team playing between three and five games. During a video conference, Mack said he is hoping to get schools who can bus to Louisville and mentioned that Bellarmine, new to Division I, was a potential participant.
“We are in the early planning stages,” U of L sports information director Kenny Klein told Cardinal Authority.
The NCAA Division I council announced Wednesday that the college basketball season can begin on Nov. 25.
Other schools and conferences have talked about playing games in a “bubble” environment. There were reports that the Holiday Hoopsgiving games to be played in Atlanta over Thanksgiving might turn into a bubble format with teams playing multiple games.
Duke reportedly is considering opting out of the Battle 4 Atlantis, to now be played in South Dakota, and hold its own event. According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, Duke “is in the process of trying to build a multi-team event this season to be held at Duke and would center around a theme and backdrop of social-justice activism.”
Also, several early-season tournaments are moving. The Maui Invitational announced Friday that it will be played in Asheville, N.C., from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The scheduled field of Alabama, Davidson, Indiana, North Carolina, Providence, Stanford, Texas and UNLV will now play in the Harrah’s Cherokee Center.
Kentucky was to begin its season Nov. 10 against Kansas in the annual Champions Classic in Chicago. There were reports earlier this week that the event will be held in Orlando instead.
