Kentucky football’s rough history in overtime games and other stats
Some Kentucky football notes from the Cats’ 42-41 overtime loss to Ole Miss on Saturday:
▪ The Cats have had some great wins in overtime. They famously beat Alabama 40-34 in overtime in 1997 under Hal Mumme, with an assistant named Mike Leach. They beat No. 1-ranked and eventual champion LSU 43-37 in overtime in 2007. Overall, however, Kentucky is 3-8 in overtime games.
▪ Saturday was the most points Kentucky has scored in a loss since Nov. 24, 2007, when the Cats lost to Tennessee 52-50 in overtime.
▪ Kentucky rushed for 408 yards, the fifth-most in school history. Chris Rodriguez rushed for a career-high 133 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. Terry Wilson rushed for a career-high 129 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. A.J. Rose rushed for a career-high 117 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
▪ The last time UK rushed for 400 yards and lost was Nov. 12, 2016, when it rushed for 443 yards and lost at Tennessee.
▪ Previous UK 400-yard games: 517 yards on 40 carries vs. Louisville on Nov. 30, 2019; 462 yards on 45 carries vs. UT Martin on Nov. 23, 2016; 443 yards on 55 carries vs. Tennessee on Nov. 12, 2016; 415 yards on 44 carries vs. Charlotte on Nov. 21, 2015.
▪ Kentucky’s defense has yet to force a turnover this season. The Cats are 9-13 under Mark Stoops when they do not force a turnover.
▪ Ole Miss averaged 11.03 yards per pass attempt, the most against Kentucky since Louisville averaged 11.24 on Nov. 26, 2016, in a game Kentucky won 41-38.
▪ Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral threw for four touchdowns without an interception. That’s the first time an offense has thrown for four touchdowns without an interception against the UK defense since Ole Miss in 2017. The Rebels won that game 37-34.
▪ Kentucky is now 0-2 against Lane Kiffin. Both were overtime losses. With Kiffin as coach, Tennessee beat UK 30-24 in 2009.
▪ Kentucky is now 16-4 under Stoops when leading at halftime. UK led Ole Miss 21-14 at the half on Saturday.
▪ The Cats are currently ranked last nationally, 74th out of 74 teams that have played college football this season, in pass efficiency defense.
