Bowling Green boys’ basketball coach and athletic director D.G. Sherrill will resign from those positions effective June 30 to take an administrative role within the Bowling Green school system.

Elliott Pratt of the Bowling Green Daily News first reported that Sherrill will become Bowling Green Independent Schools’ director of pupil personnel on July 1.

“The timing is perfect because you obviously go out with a state championship, but if we had gotten beat in the first round of the district and this job had popped open, I still wouldn’t have passed on it if offered to me,” Sherrill told the Daily News on Tuesday.

Bowling Green, led by Austin Peay signee Terry Taylor, won its first boys’ Sweet Sixteen title in March, defeating Cooper 67-56. The Purples have won four straight 4th Region titles.

Sherrill, who was named AP Coach of the Year on Saturday, went 307-92 at Bowling Green. In 2009 he led the Purples to their first region title since 1991. Ten of the program’s 14 Sweet Sixteen victories have come under his watch.
