A bourbon with a long history in distilling has brought back a special bottle.
Yellowstone Bourbon Recollections Series harkens to the days of ornate bottles sitting on bars in fancy hotels, where customers would admire the imagery and call for the whiskey by name.
Now it’s a new permanent addition to the Yellowstone family, which is produced by Limestone Branch Distillery and Lux Row Distillers.
Steve Beam, master distiller at Limestone Branch, said the bottles, which feature embossed lettering and an enamel picture of a Yellowstone Lower Falls, were originally released only at the distillery in Lebanon. But so many customers loved them, and retailers wanted to offer them, they have been released to select retailers across the country.
The whiskey will be released annually in limited amounts, partly because it has to be hand-bottled.
This year’s edition is an 8-year-old blend of bourbon from Limestone Branch and Lux Row, Beam said.
Details on price, proof, tasting notes
It’s 110 proof and has a suggested retail price of $69.99 for a 700mL bottle.
According to the tasting notes, it’s vanilla creme brulee and dark cherry on the nose. On the palate, it’s caramel, butterscotch and hints of charred oak, with a finish of grain and mocha, alongside cherry and warm spice with a hint of cinnamon candy.
Beam said the series may include different variations on year and mashbills.
History of Yellowstone bourbon
Yellowstone is the second-oldest continuously produced bourbon, Beam said, “right behind Old Forester.”
Even during Prohibition, when it was available as a medicinal whiskey, “you could never not buy Yellowstone,” Beam said.
It was founded by distiller Joseph Bernard Dant and named after the U.S.’ first national park in 1872. Beam, who is a descendant of the Dant and Beam distilling families, launched his distillery in 2011.
In 2015, Limestone Branch partnered with St. Louis-based Luxco, parent of Lux Row, which had bought the Yellowstone brand and had been bottling it for about 25 years.
Beam reformulated the brand and relaunched it as a premium bourbon.
“It was always in my house and when we opened the distillery one of my goals was to bring one of back one of the old brands,” he said. “We’ve been able to do that.”
