Coming to Kentucky: Beaver nuggets, 120 gas pumps and ‘the world’s cleanest bathrooms’

A Texas institution is colonizing Kentucky. No, it isn’t Whataburger.

But it is a favorite of travelers, especially because it know as “home of the world’s cleanest bathrooms.”

Buc-ee’s, a Texas chain of travel centers, announced on Tuesday that it plans to open its first Kentucky location in Richmond. Construction will begin after a ground-breaking ceremony April 13.

It’s expected to open in the summer of 2022.

The new super-sized travel center — don’t call it a gas station — will be at I-75 and Duncannon Lane, according to the news release. It’s part of a multistate expansion across the South, joining new locations in Florida and the first location under construction in South Carolina.

What makes Buc-ee’s special?

According to the company, favorites include “Texas barbecue, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver nuggets (the mascot of Buc-ee’s is a beaver), jerky and fresh pastries” among the thousands of snack, meal and drink options.

In 2016, Bon Appetit dubbed Buc-ee’s “The Best Rest Stop in America,” hailing it for its brisket breakfast tacos and caramel Beaver Nuggets.

And it is big: The new travel center will be more than 53,300 square feet and have 120 gas pumps, according to the release.

That’s bigger than many grocery stores.

“We’re excited to add Kentucky to our family of stores expanding throughout the Southeast,” said Stan Beard of Buc-ee’s. “Richmond is a vibrant city in the heart of the gorgeous Bluegrass region of the state, and we are thrilled to have this location as our first in the State of Kentucky.”
