A popular Lexington cafe has extended its culinary reach with the addition of a neighboring bakery.

Bread and Roses Bakery is the new offshoot of Kentucky Native Cafe. Both the cafe and the bakery are branches of Michler’s Florist, the longtime family-owned nursery, which owns both eateries.

The bakery offers rye, sourdough and other fresh breads along with laminated pastries including croissants and danishes. Robin Michler, owner of Michler’s, Kentucky Native and Bread and Roses, said the bakery has received a warm welcome from the community sinceit’s been open.

“People are already coming in. It doesn’t take things long in Lexington to spread,” Michler said.

Bread and Roses is located inside an old office building on High Street, right next to Michler’s and Kentucky Native. Michler said they bought the property a few years ago and said he was looking for a way to “activate” the space and bring people in from the neighborhood.

He said Kentucky Native had already been baking its own pretzels and breads, and a bakery in the location made sense because baking was already in their repertoire.

Bread and Roses is only open Wednesday through Friday from 11 to 6 p.m., but Michler said he hopes to expand those hours in the future. The same staff who work at the bakery work at Kentucky Native, Michler said, making it a challenge to extend the hours.

Michler said Bread and Roses serves items “to hit the dinner table, rather than the breakfast table.”

“On your way home from work, we’re there still,” Michler said. “When most people want to get off, and if they want to pick something up ... that’s our market right now.”
