Gourmet burger chain opens first Kentucky location in Winchester. Why not Lexington?

If you’ve been dying to try the new gourmet West Coast burger chain opening in Central Kentucky, today’s the day.

Fatburger, which is headquartered in Beverly Hills, is officially opening March 9 in Winchester. It’s the first location of the chain in Kentucky. The company, which now also owns Fazoli’s, announced it was coming to the area last October.

The location at 1452 W. Lexington Ave. in a former Steak ’n Shake is a dual fast food concept restaurant and also has a Buffalo’s Express chicken wings inside, so you can get burgers or chicken at the drive-thru.

Why Winchester, population 20,000 or so and not Lexington, with about 325,000, or Louisville, with more than 620,000?

“There isn’t a true fast casual burger option in the area and we saw an opportunity to bring our beloved, custom-built burgers to the area in addition to our world-famous chicken wings and proprietary wing sauces,” FAT Brands said in an October statement.

What is on Fatburger’s menu?

Fatburger bills itself as “The Last Great Hamburger Stand” with a menu of cooked and made-to-order burgers, scratch-made onion-rings, house-made chili and milkshakes.

The Classic Fatburger, which is a third of a pound of beef, can be stacked to an XXXL, a pound and a half of beef, potentially more than 2,000 calories in one burger. Fries come in “fat” and “skinny,” as well as sweet potato. There also are chili dogs, chili cheese fries, and much more.

Buffalo’s Express menu has Buffalo-style wings with 13 house-made sauces, plus dips, wraps, sandwiches, specialty tacos, salads and rice bowls.

Buffalo’s Express, known for its world-famous chicken wings and proprietary wing sauces, will be in a dual concept location with Fatburger.

Last month, federal authorities announced they are investigating FAT Brands CEO Andrew Wiederhorn for fraud. The chain owns California based Fatburger and Johnny Rockets, as well as Fazoli’s now.

Will Lexington get a Fatburger?

Seems likely. In October, the company said that they “are always looking to strategically expand our footprint and now that we are debuting in Kentucky, we will certainly explore additional expansion opportunities if they are the right fit.”
