Lexington’s about to get a bit warmer and fluffier, and not a moment to soon: A new gourmet biscuit place is opening on Wednesday.

Maple Street Biscuits, which also has a location in Louisville, is opening at 2270 Nicholasville Rd. The chain, which has been owned by Cracker Barrel since 2019, is looking for more locations in Central Kentucky, too.

The restaurant in the Zandale Shopping Center opens at 7 a.m. and the first 15 guests in line on Wednesday will receive gold cards for free biscuits & coffee every week for a year (valued at $650), according to a spokeswoman.

The location is next to a new Chipotle in the spot where O’Charley’s used to be before the building was torn down for the new restaurants. That O’Charley’s closed in February 2020. A demolition permit was issued in February for the former O’Charley’s at 2895 Richmond Rd. which also closed in 2020. Lexington’s only O’Charley’s location is on Harrodsburg Road.

Maple Street menu of gourmet biscuits, mimosas

The new Maple Street Biscuits on Nicholasville features a menu of “comfort food with a modern twist,” such as gourmet biscuit sandwiches like the Squawking Goat, with battered chicken strips, toasted goat cheese and scratch-made pepper jelly.

The menu at Maple Street Biscuit Co. includes gourmet biscuits and fried chicken, waffles, the Bluegrass Grits Bowl, sides and salads and specialty coffees.

There also are four versions of biscuits and gravy as well as waffles, “frittaffles” (baked omelets) and grits, as well as inventive sides such as a three-layer hashbrown “cake” with potato hashbrowns, cheddar cheese, a fried egg and gravy.

Maple Street also has coffee drinks, Mason Jar Mimosas and other drinks.

Lexington biscuit restaurants

Maple Street joins Lexington’s biscuit boom: Last month Biscuit Belly announced that the chain is planning two more locations. Biscuit Belly opened a location last year on East Main Street and now one will be coming to 112 Lucille Dr. at Leestown Road/Great Acres, and another to 4235 Harrodsburg Rd. in the Ethington Shops. Also, Tudor’s Biscuit World opened on New Circle Road in September 2020.

And Lexington has plenty of home-grown biscuit options from Winchell’s, Doodles, Magee’s Bakery and Keeneland’s track kitchen.
