New-to-Lexington acai restaurant offers fruit bowls, smoothies
Summer in Lexington is about to get sweeter. A new-to-Lexington acai and smoothie bowl restaurant with a beach theme is coming to the Fountains at Palomar, just off Harrodsburg Road, next to Chipotle and near the future home of Publix.
Playa Bowls, with its surfboards, mermaids, palm tree paintings and multiple TVs, offers fruit-based blended bowls with an assortment of toppings to choose from, smoothies, oatmeal bowls and coffee.
The restaurant’s grand opening is slated for Aug. 17, and they will be giving away free T-shirts and a free bowl each to the first 50 guests in line, according to owner Dee Smith.
This is Playa Bowls’ third Kentucky location; there are two in Louisville.
“We have pretty much every fruit you can think of, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, pineapples (and) mangos,” Smith said. “And then after the fruit, we also have drizzles and other toppings.”
Smith said the most popular toppings are Nutella, peanut butter, white chocolate, honey and agave.
A custom blended bowl $13 plus specialty add-ons. The base level bowls are acai, coconut, kale, pitaya, banana and mango. Smoothies and coffees start at $8 and oatmeal bowls start at $7.
What is acai?
Acai is a berry that comes from the acai palm tree. It is considered a superfood, which offers multiple health benefits. Low in sugar and filled with antioxidants, fiber, magnesium and other vitamin-rich qualities, the berries can be eaten raw, but they are popularly served frozen and blended alongside other fruits and toppings.
