Graeter’s Ice Cream opens new Lexington location. Are any more coming?

A popular Cincinnati-based craft ice cream maker has opened a third Lexington location.

Graeter’s Ice Cream is now open just off Harrodsburg Road at 3957 Fountainblue Lane in the Palomar Springs shopping center, just down the road from the Publix, shops and restaurants at Fountains of Palomar.

The 2,500-square-foot ice cream shop is in a newly built structure next to the building that houses the popular Bella Cafe restaurant.

Lexington has two other Graeter’s locations in Chevy Chase and Hamburg. But this new location has something the other two do not: a drive-thru.

The new south side location also has dine-in seating, and outdoor patio area and will offer the brand’s full menu of ice cream, frozen drinks, sundaes and other treats.

Possible future Graeter’s locations in Lexington

Chip Graeter, fourth-generation co-owner and chief of retail operations for Graeter’s, said the popular ice cream company had been eyeing a new Lexington location for a while.

“We’ve been growing quite a bit in Indy since the beginning of the year, and we are absolutely always looking for new opportunities in Kentucky, Lexington, Louisville — we’re looking strongly in Louisville right now,” said Graeter. “We’re in a growth mode, but it’s a very deliberate in a slow growth mode.”

Graeter said any future new Kentucky location will not have a bakery with handmade donuts, cookies and cakes made daily; those are and will only be in the Cincinnati area.

Graeter’s, which says its America’s oldest family-owned and operated craft ice cream maker, has 50-plus stores in five states. The new location is the first Graeter’s to open in Lexington in 10 years.

The company will celebrate a grand opening for the new ice cream shop with a ribbon cutting at noon on June 11.
