A Scott County middle school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl was released from jail after relatives paid a $100,000 bond.

Jason Alan Carpenter, 38, of Georgetown was released at 2 p.m. Friday, said Michael Humphrey, operations manager at the Scott County Detention Center.

Carpenter is charged with 23 counts of possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor, 23 counts of promoting a sexual performance by a minor and 36 counts first-degree sexual abuse. Police have said Carpenter had sex with the victim 36 times beginning in 2009, when the girl was 16.

Kentucky's legal age of consent is 16 unless one of the parties is in a position of authority, such as a teacher or a coach.

Carpenter was the coach of the high school girls golf team until he resigned in July. Carpenter, who has taught at the middle school for 16 years, was suspended with pay pending an internal investigation that stems from allegations made against him in August.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 6 in Scott District Court.
