  • Lexington police arrested Jon’Tay Mattingly for a shooting that injured a man.
  • Mattingly faces assault and handgun charges while already on active probation.
  • Surveillance footage and ankle monitoring data linked Mattingly to the crime.

A 20-year-old man previously accused of murder was charged in a shooting that left a man seriously injured Thursday in Lexington.

Jon’Tay Mattingly, 20, is charged with first-degree assault and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

In an update, the Lexington Police Department said Mattingly was also charged Friday with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief and tampering with physical evidence.

The shooting happened around 11:10 a.m. in the area of Winburn Drive and McCullough Drive, near Russell Cave Road. A man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Court documents say surveillance footage captured two shooters, one of whom police say is Mattingly. He used a fully automatic handgun, and the victim was shot in the head.

Surveillance footage showed Mattingly wearing a unique gray jacket with a black stripe across the front. Court documents say Mattingly wore the same jacket when he was arrested last month on theft and burglary charges.

Mattingly posted a $2,500 bond in that case, and was released from jail the day of his arrest, according to court records.

Mattingly is also on probation after he pleaded guilty in 2022 to robbery, fleeing or evading police, receiving stolen property, wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid or assistance and possession of a handgun by a minor.

Mattingly was ordered to wear an ankle monitor as part of his probation in that case. That ankle monitor placed him near the scene of Thursday’s shooting, according to court records.

His probation was scheduled to end in 2027.

Mattingly was also previously charged with murder in the March 2024 killing of 17-year-old Kenlon Johnson.

Police said he was one of four people who set up Kenlon to be killed. But surveillance footage did not show the actual shooting, and Lexington police could not definitely say who pulled the trigger.

Mattingly’s murder charge was dismissed after a Fayette County grand jury declined to indict him in February. Police have not announced any additional arrests in Kenlon’s killing.

Mattingly is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center on a $75,000 bond for Thursday’s shooting. He is scheduled to appear in Fayette District Court Friday afternoon.
