‘Unsafe.’ Friday is day 10 of canceled classes for FCPS as district calls snow day

Friday will be another snow day for Fayette County Public Schools students, with classes canceled FCPS announced Thursday afternoon.

District officials cited “continued unsafe road conditions on school bus routes.”

A decision about afternoon and evening activities for Friday is pending, though the district did have after-school events Thursday.

FCPS used four consecutive nontraditional instruction days, from Jan. 26-29, before having four straight traditional snow days Feb. 2-5.

Only March 20 has been confirmed as a make-up day for students. Other potential make-up dates are noted in our instructional calendar.

FCPS officials have canceled 10 in-person school days in the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern on Jan. 24 and 25.

Gov. Andy Beshear is among those who have criticized Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government officials for not having Fayette County roads cleared more promptly.

Beshear called conditions in Lexington “unacceptable.”

“You will see KYTC trucks back in Lexington trying to speed this thing up,” Beshear said Thursday.

Mayor Linda Gorton’s spokesperson Susan Straub, responded Thursday: “We appreciate the support being offered by the state. We have state trucks, construction equipment, and city trucks on our streets clearing the roads. We pre-treated the roads before the storm began.”
