Yahoo Travel named Louisville one of the six best United States cities for a quick vacation without breaking the bank.

Accompanying Louisville on the list of “unassuming cities” was Cincinnati, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Buffalo, New York and Spokane, Washington.

What to do in Louisville

For a traditional “Kentucky experience,” visitors can explore horse racing history and how bourbon made its roots in the Commonwealth’s culture. The Kentucky Derby Museum offers tours of both the museum and Churchill Downs. General admission tickets start at $20 for anyone older than 12, and $12 for children 5-12 years old. A general admission ticket pays for a tour of the museum and Churchill Downs.

Visitors can walk Whiskey Row on W Main Street in downtown Louisville, where bourbon and tobacco industries operated their offices and warehouses. Once the forefront of the bourbon industry in the late 1800s until prohibition, the buildings spanning one block between First and Second street function now as restaurants, shops, bars and a hotel.

For those who might veer more toward sports history, in addition to the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum offers different levels of tours and experiences every day of the week.

The Muhammad Ali Center holds numerous permanent exhibits for museum goers:

  • “The Greatest” Timeline: Visitors can walk through the “triumphs and drama” of the boxer’s career.
  • All Ali, All the Time: An area to watch some of Ali’s most famous fights.
  • (Float Like a) Butterfly Garden: A butterfly garden that helps support monarch butterfly habitats.
  • Six Core Principles: Reflect on the values that shaped Ali’s life and boxing career.
  • Train with Ali: A recreation of the Champ’s Deer Lake training camp in Pennsylvania.

The travel site also highlighted Old Louisville as one the city’s most distinctive features. The mostly residential neighborhood is known for its Victorian mansions built in the 1870s that give a look into how Louisville came to be what it is today.
