More KY schools close Friday amid flooding. See latest district closures
Several Central Kentucky school districts canceled classes Friday after flooding from heavy rain continued in many parts of Kentucky.
Roads were flooded Friday in several counties and officials called off school in some places because of flooding and the threat of more.
In Madison County, school officials said in a Friday morning Facebook post: “Heavy rain, storms, and flooding on many of our roads are making it unsafe for travel. We hope everyone stays safe and has a wonderful Spring Break.”
Berea Community Schools, also in Madison County, said in a post announcing canceled classes, “current conditions make travel and school operations unsafe.”
Jessamine County, Montgomery County and Bourbon County school officials posted similar statements canceling classes.
Much of Kentucky is under a flash flood warning Friday morning, and rain is expected to continue through Saturday.
The days of rain come after a severe line of storms hit Kentucky Wednesday evening and early Thursday. The National Weather Service has confirmed at least two tornadoes touched down in the state. Estill County and other districts canceled school Thursday due to impassable roads.
School officials in Clinton, Cumberland, Russell and Washington counties also canceled in-person classes for Friday ahead of flooding, according to Facebook posts.
Russell County Superintendent Micheal Ford said in a post officials were concerned about flooding in low-lying areas, small bridges and in spots where buses turn around.
Ford said cafeterias at all schools would be open from 9 to 11 a.m. so students could get breakfast and pick up a lunch to go. Students can go to any school, not just the one they attend, Ford said.
Additionally, Garrard County Schools announced Friday will be a non-traditional instruction (NTI) day for students there.
The weather service said up to 4 to 5 inches of rain had fallen in some counties, and more was possible.
