Bill Murray had a front-row seat in Rupp Arena on Saturday afternoon, but he wasn’t there to cheer on the Wildcats.
The acclaimed actor was in town for the annual Kentucky-Louisville rivalry game to support his son, U of L assistant coach Luke Murray, and has popped up at other games involving the younger Murray dating back to his tenure as an assistant coach at Xavier. He was in the crowd for Louisville’s NCAA Tournament game against Minnesota in Des Moines earlier this year.
On Saturday, Murray sat directly behind the U of L bench, wearing a black and red Maker’s Mark hat with a black and red hoodie.
U of L Coach Chris Mack hired Luke Murray as an assistant in 2015, and — after three seasons with the Musketeers — Murray followed Mack to Louisville last year. He also serves as the Cardinals’ recruiting coordinator and has gained a reputation as one of the top young recruiters in college basketball.
This wasn’t Bill Murray’s first trip to Lexington for a sporting event in 2019.
Last April, he showed up for a Spring Meet race day at Keeneland, where he presented the trophy following one race and spent time around the track with Luke and his family.
