Kentucky basketball sophomore Trent Noah suffered a lower left leg injury during the first half of UK’s season-opening win over Nicholls on Tuesday night at Rupp Arena.
Noah appeared to tweak his ankle while chasing down a loose ball near the rim, and remained down for several minutes in pain while clutching his left ankle and foot. Brandon Wells, Kentucky’s senior athletic trainer for men’s basketball, ran onto the court to provide medical attention to Noah.
After remaining down for several minutes, Noah walked slowly off the Rupp Arena court with the assistance of UK trainers. The injury occurred with 6:54 left in the first half.
After making it off the court, Noah walked under his own power, with a noticeable limp, back to the tunnel leading to the Kentucky locker room.
Noah didn’t return to the UK bench during the remainder of the first half, but he came out of the locker room for second-half warmups with the rest of his teammates. Noah didn’t play in the second half of Kentucky’s 77-51 home triumph over the Colonels.
Postgame, Kentucky coach Mark Pope said Noah was cleared to return to the second half of the game, despite how severe his injury initially appeared.
“We have to get him healthy because he’s an important part of this team,” Pope added about Noah.
Noah’s sophomore season in Lexington has been met with increased expectations, both from the player himself and from his head coach.
Noah — who made 24 appearances off the bench for Kentucky last season — started each of the Wildcats’ three games so far this season, two exhibition contests and Tuesday’s opener against Nicholls.
In UK’s exhibition victory over preseason No. 1-ranked Purdue, Noah had 10 points, two rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes.
The Harlan County native had played nine minutes against Nicholls prior to his injury. He hadn’t scored, missing both of his shots from the field. Both missed attempts were 3-pointers. Noah added two defensive rebounds and a steal against the Colonels before leaving the game.
The Wildcats also played Tuesday’s season opener without projected starting point guard Jaland Lowe (right shoulder) and top transfer addition Jayden Quaintance (recovery from a torn ACL). Junior forward Reece Potter, a transfer addition from Miami (Ohio) and a former local high school star at Lexington Catholic, was also not in uniform for UK against Nicholls.
