For the second time this season, the Kentucky women’s basketball team’s home game against Mississippi State has been postponed.

UK was originally scheduled to face Mississippi State on Jan. 3 in Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, but COVID-19 problems in the UK program caused that game to be postponed and moved to Thursday night.

But now, COVID-19 issues in the Mississippi State program have forced the game to be postponed a second time.

The game postponement was announced by the Southeastern Conference on Wednesday. The SEC updated its policies for basketball game postponements, cancellations, rescheduling of games and no-contest declarations in late December.

Mississippi State interim head coach Doug Novak told reporters Tuesday that MSU had only six available players at practice. SEC policies state that a team “will be required to play if it has at least seven scholarship student-athletes and one countable coaching staff member available to participate.”

According to UK, ticket information regarding the postponements will be sent directly to ticket holders.

Kentucky will not play a game this Thursday, and the Wildcats’ next game will come Sunday afternoon at No. 5 Tennessee.

The Wildcats are 8-4 overall, own a 1-1 record in SEC play and are ranked No. 19 by The Associated Press.

A new date has not yet been announced for the UK-MSU meeting, which is set to be their only regular-season matchup this season.

Kentucky now has two SEC games without announced dates.

In addition to the Mississippi State game, a new date has also not yet been announced for Kentucky’s game at Auburn, which was scheduled to open SEC play for both schools on Dec. 30, but was postponed due to COVID-19 in the Auburn program.

Overall, this is the fourth COVID-related postponement of the season for UK.

In addition to the SEC postponements for games against Auburn and Mississippi State, a non-conference home game against Morgan State — scheduled for Dec. 17 — was called off due to COVID issues in the Morgan State program.
